Occupational Therapy is the treatment of conditions affecting the performance of individuals of all ages, involving them in significant activities with the objective of confer them maximum functionality and independence, so that they can engage in the occupations they want to.
The Occupational Therapist assesses the sensory, perceptive, physical and social functions of the individual, as well as the environmental factors influencing his performance in activities; he identifies areas of dysfunction and involves the individual in a structured programme of significant activities, in a way to help him overcome the difficulties arising from his condition. The activities are chosen according to the personal, social, cultural and economic needs of the individual, and reflect the environmental factors orienting his life.

- The Occupational Therapist develops his activities in different public or private healthcare institutions, such as: hospitals, health centres and specialized centres (namely rehabilitation centres)
- educational institutions such as schools, kindergartens, occupational centres and residencies
- private charity institutions and retirement homes
- within the community and at workplaces, with the aim of fitting individuals for an active life
- and finally, in research centres and teaching institutions.
